Overview
The Applied Research carried out by the ATM Research Laboratory provides the following services to its customers:
- Cost Benefit Analyses:
Details
- NEAR carries out Cost Benefit Analyses into all aspects of Air Traffic Management systems.
This research varies from assessing the cost benefit of tools developed by industry to
assessment of the communications infrastructure required to support some ATM concepts.
- Data Warehouse:
Details
- NEAR has for several years been saving Air Situation Display Information and Global
Weather information. These are now fed on line from Volpe and from the Meteorological
Network. Through the Embry-Riddle Meteorology Department, NEAR has access to any weather
information available. The warehouse is used to carry out detailed and statistical analyses
of the NAS and its components and reactions to weather and other events.
- Fast Time Simulation:
Details
- NEAR has worked with the Preston Aviation Solutions (a subsidiary of Boeing) since they started
marketing TAAM in the United States. NEAR not only uses TAAM for research for
government and industry but also provides training in TAAM to up to 24 graduate
students per semester.
- Real Time Distributed Simulation:
Details
- NEAR has developed its own real time ATM simulation. The simulator has now been expanded
to 8 controller positions and is being linked to aircraft simulators and will eventually
be linked to real aircraft.
- Metrics and Methodologies:
Details
- NEAR is continuing research into abstract and objective metrics for measurement
of all components of ATM systems including human factors metrics. Metrics are being
developed to measure both the controller and cockpit workload by concepts such as
self-separation or free-flight and of the use of novel glass cockpit displays.
